Boat trip: Mila 23
The Lipovan village the Olympic-medal canoeists came from, on the stretch with more birds than anything else in the programme.
The route runs along the Sulina canal, then the Old Danube, the Bogdaproste canal and lake, Lake La Amiază, Lake Trei Iezere, Lake Rădăcinosul and the Eracle canal, as far as Mila 23.
The sheer number of creatures in the area makes Mila 23 a target for anyone coming to see birds and animals, but the village is also the truest picture of a Lipovan settlement in the Delta. It was from here that the canoeists and kayakers set out in the 1960s who brought Romania a remarkable number of Olympic medals — Ivan Patzaichin the best known among them.
