Letea Forest

The largest sandbank in the Danube Delta at 170 km², and the forest that carries its name covers 700 hectares and has been a nature reserve since 1938. The woodland grows in bands — hasmacuri — and the lianas and wild vines give it an almost tropical look. The forest shelters colonies of wild horses. You get there along the Sulina branch, then the Old Danube and the Magearu canal, as far as the village of Letea. From the village, the tour through the forest is run by locals in safari vehicles — around 40 lei per person, plus 10 lei to enter, neither included in the package.

The Lipovan village that shows most faithfully how life in the Delta is lived. It was from here that the canoeists and kayakers set out in the 1960s who brought Romania a remarkable number of Olympic medals, Ivan Patzaichin the best known among them. The route runs through the Sulina canal, the Old Danube, the Bogdaproste canal and lake, Lakes La Amiază, Trei Iezere and Rădăcinosul, and the Eracle canal. The sheer number of creatures in the area makes the journey there the main reason to go: it is the stretch with more birds than anything else in the programme.

Sulina and the mouth of the Danube

The little town at the end of the Danube, with the charm left over from the days when it was a European port. You follow the navigable Sulina branch out to where the river enters the Black Sea, past the town's promenade and the Old Lighthouse. Weather permitting, you head out to sea as far as the wreck, then turn into the canal to the beach. The day can be spent on the serviced beach, with parasols and terraces, or on the wild one. In town there is the private Old Sulina exhibition, the Heroic Sailors' Monument, the Pirate's Grave in the Cosmopolitan Cemetery, and the harbour promenade with its terraces and small shops.

Caraorman Forest

The Delta's second forest reserve, on the Caraorman sandbank. It can be chosen instead of the trip to Letea, at no extra cost. As there, the tour through the forest is run by locals in safari vehicles, at a charge — around 40 lei per person, plus 10 lei to enter.

an hour, coming and going

The transfer from Murighiol isn't a journey, it's the first excursion. You pass along the Sfântu Gheorghe branch, the Uzlina canal and lake, Lake Isacova, and the Litcov, Lung and Caraorman canals, until you reach the Sulina branch. From the width of the Danube you move gradually into small, shaded canals, with tiny settlements on the banks. On the stretches of open lake there are pelicans, cormorants and herons — most of them without needing a separate trip at all.

You fish straight from the jetty in front of the guesthouse or from the canal behind the garden, no boat and no timetable needed. The recreational or sport fishing permit is issued free of charge by the Reserve Administration.
